Here are the days of the Chol Q’ij mapped onto the Gregorian month of September 2026.

After the flurry of eclipses and other cosmic phenomena during August, September will be a relatively quiet month. Perhaps the most important day will be the equinox which will fall on 23rd September at 00:05 UTC (22nd September at 18:05 Guatemala time.)

The El Mirador Trek 2027

As many of you know, I have made the El Mirador Trek 8 times now, taking a small group with me each time. In 2026 I made two journeys which were very much retreat type journeys. In 2027 my focus will be more on exploration and adventure as I extend the time trekking in the jungle from 6 days to 10 days, and the distance to 150km. Of course, there will always be ceremony involved, but next year’s trek will take us deeper into the jungle to the remote sites of La Muralla and Naachtun.

August 2026 will be a very interesting month for sky watchers.

Perhaps the biggest event will be the total solar eclipse over West Africa, Europe, part of North America and the Arctic. It will take place between 15:34 and 19:57 UTC, and will be the first total eclipse over Europe since 1999. The path of totality will cross the western tip of Iceland, northern Portugal and Spain.

Additionally, a partial lunar eclipse will occur over Africa, Europe and the Americas on the night of the 27th/28th August. Here in Guatemala the peak will occur at 22:12 local time on the 27th August with the moon in the Southeast and approximately 96% of the lunar surface covered.

At this latitude in Guatemala, the solar zenith passage happens around the 11th – 13th of August. This year the solar zenith will be closer to 12th August, on the day 7 Iq’. The timing of the solar zenith is very important as it signifies a time to plant the second crop of corn. The rains come back soon after, and there will be enough of the rainy season remaining to ensure its full development. Corn planted after the solar zenith may not come to its full potential.

The Perseid meteor shower can be one of the most impressive meteor showers of the year. This year, the peak will be around 4:20 am on 13th August. With the new moon falling the day before, it could provide a really spectacular show if the sky is clear with up to 86 meteors per hour at the peak time. They radiate from the constellation of Perseus, which you can find in the northeast sky.
