Here are the days of the Chol Q’ij mapped onto the Gregorian month of October 2026.

Mercury will be at its greatest Eastern elongation (highest point in the western sky ) on the 12th just after sunset.

We will also have both the Draconid meteor shower on the 7th, and the Orionid meteor shower, one of the most spectacular I have ever personally observed, on the 21st.  This year, the timing of the Draconid meteor shower will be close to the new moon. It is possible that the Draconids may be interesting to observe, even for a more minor meteor shower. The Orionids occur in the week leading up to the full moon. This means that although the moon will be bright, it will set around 02:00. As will be best viewed around 04:30 am on the morning of the 21st, but will likely produce meteors a day on either side of this too!

Venus is on its rapid descent to the underworld, or rather it will overtake the Earth in its orbit. Venus will enter its inferior conjunction phase, when it disappears from view on 12 E’ (21st October 2026) when it will disappear from the evening sky. it will then pass between the Earth and the Sun. For keen observers, it should be visible once more on 7 Ajpu (29th October 2026) when it rises just before the Sun as a morning planet. On 7 Ajpu, Venus should appear on the horizon at an azimuth of 106 degrees at around 05:20.

The El Mirador Trek 2027

As many of you know, I have made the El Mirador trek 8 times now, taking a small group with me each time. In 2026 I made two journeys which were very much retreat type journeys. In 2027 my focus will be more on exploration and adventure as I extend the time trekking in the jungle from 6 days to 10 days, and the distance to 150km. Of course, there will always be ceremony involved, but next year’s trek will take us deeper into the jungle to the remote sites of La Muralla and Naachtun.
