Here are the days of the Chol Q’ij mapped onto the Gregorian month of March 2025.
As I write this I feel a great sense of excitement for what will be a very active 30-day period. Of course, with it being March, we will be passing through the time of Equinox, which will occur this year at 09:01 UTC on March 20th, and 03:01 on March 20th Guatemala time.
However, many other celestial events are happening. We have been accustomed to many planets being visible in our sky over the past two months. While Jupiter and Mars will remain visible, we will have a change in the western sky at sunset as Saturn is replaced by Mercury. Perhaps one of the best times to see Mercury will be around the 8th March at its greatest eastern elongation. It can be located close to Venus, just above the western horizon, right after sunset. You will need a very flat western horizon to see it as it will be very low in the sky.
On the 14th March we can look forward to a total lunar eclipse. Much of the world will be able to experience this, although in Western Europe and Australia it will be a brief penumbral eclipse just before or after moonset or moonrise respectively. It is the Americas where the greatest visibility will occur. In Guatemala we will enter totality at 00:26, with the maximum occurring at 00:58 local time (UTC-6)
Venus is on its rapid descent to the underworld, or rather it will overtake the Earth in its orbit. Venus will enter its inferior conjunction phase, when it disappears from view for 8 days, on 20th March. I find it interesting that the inferior conjunction begins on the equinox.
8 Days later, on the day 12 Ajpu, Venus will reappear as the morning star. I have been looking at various pieces of software and comparing it with the Venus table of the Dresden Codex, and this seems to be the day. According to the GMT correlation, this would be the day 12 Ajpu 4 Wayeb. I know you may be thinking “didn’t we just go through Wayeb?” This is why I like to draw the distinction between the Tz’apin Q’ij (5 closing days) of the solar calendar of the Highland Maya and Wayeb of the Ha’ab, which will have its new year on 30th March. I have decided to celebrate the heliacal rise of Venus by watching the event from the top of the El Tigre pyramid at the site of El Mirador.
Finally, on 29th March, a partial solar eclipse will be visible. The greatest visibility will be over northern Europe and northeastern Canada.
