To mark the transition of Venus from evening planet to morning planet I have decided to create a presentation about the Dresden Codex Venus table.

Astronomy has been an interest of mine since I was a child. Over the past years I have also taken a great interest in the astronomy of the ancient Maya. The study of the remaining codices, the architecture and the calendars reveals the high degree of sophistication with which they observed the sky. These dedicated astronomers and mathematicians recorded their findings on stones and in bark paper books. Unfortunately, much has been lost to time and violence, but some jewels of knowledge remain.

I have been studying the Dresden Codex for some time now, in particular the Venus table. It is fascinating to see how the movements of Venus were both recorded and predicted by the table. In turn particular auguries were attributed to the different days on which Venus would appear as a morning planet.

As Venus follows a predictable motion, this table still works, but it would need to be correctly aligned to the inferior conjunction date. This is something I have been working on for some time and I now have come to a conclusion.

I decided to create a presentation to share my understanding of the Venus table, and my conclusions. I will make this presentation on 10 Tz’i, Monday 19th October 2026 at 11am Guatemala time. The presentation be broadcast over Zoom.
