Here are the days of the Chol Q’ij mapped onto the Gregorian month of October 2024.
Astronomically, there are three interesting events this month. Firstly, an annular solar eclipse will occur on 4 Aq’ab’al, 2nd October, peaking at 15:42 UTC. This eclipse will be visible in southern South America, across Chile and Argentina. This is an exciting eclipse from the point of view of calendars. It is 2599 days (approximately 10 cycles of the sacred calendar) after the so-called great American eclipse” of 21st August 2017. Following the same pattern, the next eclipse in the series will fall on 14th November 2031 and will cut across Central America (mainly Panama). This eclipse timing is known as a Tzolkinex, named after its connection with the sacred calendar. Perhaps it might also bring up some repetition or echo from the events of August 2017.
As the darker nights begin to arrive (in the Northern Hemisphere), we are treated to a greater number of celestial events. During this time we will have both the Draconid meteor shower on the 7th, and the Orionid meteor shower, one of the most spectacular I have ever personally observed, on the 21st/22nd. This year, however, the timing of the Orionid meteor shower will be close to the full moon. This will wash out the sky and make the shower much less visible. It will be best viewed around 4 am on the morning of the 22nd, but will likely produce meteors a day on either side of this too!
