Here are the days of the Chol Q’ij mapped onto the Gregorian month of November 2025.
Events
The day of 5th November 2024 will be 13 Iq’. It will be the second appearance of the Mam, 13 Iq’, who took on the burden of time on 18th February 2025. One way this could be seen is that the first 260 days are the days when the corn is grown under the full light and power of the Mam. Now as the dry season approaches, his power wanes. This 105-day period will end when the new Mam, 1 Kej, takes his seat on 18th February 2026. This is known as the seating of the Mam (the Maya Solar new year.)
One of the important cross-quarter days within archeoastronomy is Samhain. This does not fall on 31st October as some might believe, but on 7th November (03:51 UTC). To me, it is far more important to tie such an event to solar and celestial events rather than the Gregorian calendar. It is seen within the Celtic calendar as the first day of winter. In Guatemala this day corresponds with the acronycal rising of the Pleiades, this important star cluster rising on the eastern horizon at sunset. It is possible that this event was taken as an important indicator of the beginning of the dry season by ancient Maya astronomers.
Additionally, Venus will disappear from the morning sky later in the month of November. According to the Dresden Codex Venus table, this will occur 1 Ajmak (19th November 2025). Venus has been in the morning sky since 28th March 2025. According to the Dresden codex Venus table, two lords identified as Kisin and the lord of corn have been attacking a figure supposedly representing the foreigner. On 19th November, the influence of these two figures disappears into the underworld, perhaps bringing relief to those under attack.
This month also brings us two meteor showers, the Taurid meteor shower on the 4th/5th and the Leonids on the 17th/18th.
