5 TojThe day 5 Toj is another day where the number and the nawal represent the same idea. Both are seen as representatives of the sacred fire and through the fire we make payments to keep our lives in balance.

The energy of 5 Toj would strongly suggest the payment of debts being achieved through work. Of course, this is the way that debts are resolved, either financially or through trade. It is a day of service, a day to ensure the goodwill of those around you through your work. However, today there is a special significance to this. Whilst the work may be hard, on 5 days in particular, the result is directly proportional to the effort involved. This would suggest that putting all your energy, your focus and your love into your service today will really go a long way to resolving any debts which need clearing. This will also stand you in good stead for your future, helping to keep you healthy and in balance.

If you have outstanding payments to be made, this is the day to make them.

The Sacred Mayan calendar is often said to be a calendar of human life, and parts of it can be seen as a microcosm of the human body. The number five is one of these parts. It is representative of the hand with it’s five digits. It is with our hands that we work, and with what we earn for that work that we pay our debts. Five is also a number that relates to the sacred fire where we pay our debts with offerings and prayers. Five might be so busy working that it fails to remember what it is working for. It can also signify that what it is attached to becomes work, or is “hard work”.

11 TojBalance always has to be restored in life, and in the past few days the energies have been very giving. Today is the day to redress the balance, to make payment for what you have received.

After the empowerment of 9 Kej and the abundance of 10 Q’anil, the energy of the day 11 Toj gives us the opportunity to pay our way. Whilst we might make beautiful, colourful, lengthy ceremonies here, it doesn’t have to be like that. Just lighting a little candle and saying thank you can be  enough to keep in balance.

It may be that payment goes out in many directions today, in one way or another. There are two ways of approaching it, either you can wait for old debts to find you, or you can take a proactive approach and make an effort to find and resolve them. Today you might find a few more than you bargained for, and some that you had forgotten. Hopefully you received enough abundance on 10 Q’anil to  give some back, if not, the energy of 11 Toj may bring you a reminder.

The number 11 is a high and odd number. This gives it some rather challenging properties, although it can come good in the end. Imagine you visit Ireland and are transfixed by the green of the hills, then you go to Morocco and are awed by the red of the buildings, then you go to the Caribbean and are moved by the turquoise sea. You return home and paint a beautiful picture using those colours. When you were in Ireland you didn’t know you were going to paint that masterpiece, you may not have even known why you were there.  This is how 11 works. You are sure you need to be doing something, but unsure why. You are collecting experience through many wanderings.

4 TojThe nawal Toj brings with it the appropriate time to make a payment, but today this is very much something which should apply to the physical reality. It is a day to pay off your physical debts and allow others to pay theirs.

Our debts weigh heavily on our energy, whether they are big karmic debts or that £10 you forgot to give back to someone. It doesn’t matter if it is only a tiny debt, in fact those you forget are the ones which mount up. They connect both the debtor and the lender, nibbling away at their energy and causing both an imbalance and and unnecessary attachment. The theme of this trecena of Kame is spiritual transformation, and this is difficult to undergo when such physical attachments are present.

Big debts can be very detrimental to the health, but may also be difficult to clear. Small ones might be more manageable. Sometimes just an acknowledgement towards the person you owe may go a long way to creating harmony, just by showing you haven’t forgotten. Likewise, it is important to remind others of their debt towards you, even if you feel awkward doing this. The energy goes both ways and it is better to clear it. Of course it doesn’t have to be about money, it may be that you owe the most precious of commodities, time.

Today is a day to repay favours, if nothing is asked for then why not just do something nice for someone who has helped you out in the past. If you haven’t got anyone to repay, then this would be an excellent day for a random act of kindness towards a complete stranger.

Toj helps to bring health and well being when payments are made, and so making physical payments today can help to heal divides within your community and bring transformation.

Four represents the cardinal points, the four colours of maize, the four carriers of the year, the two equinoxes and two solstices, as well as midnight, sunrise, midday and sunset. The number four is representative of the four first men, who raised the sky from the sea to create the world we live on. In Mayan myth it is four pillars that support the sky from the Earth. As you can imagine, four is a number which represents stability, a solar number. Even though it is still low, it is thought of as a good number.

10 TojThis is a day of service to your community. It is the payment that you make to keep your place in harmony, to keep your place in balance, which in turn keeps you nourished and healthy.

Whether you pay your energy through making ceremonies for your community or through physical work within the community, today is a day when gathering people together may help to really get things done. If you are able to co-ordinate a community spring clean, litter pick, or general tidy up of your neighbourhood, you could not find a better day for it. Many hands will certainly make light work today, in both the physical and the more esoteric sense. Hand in hand it is possible to make a huge difference to the world, and when we care for our community and surroundings, we can bring peace and healing to it. This in turn enriches our own lives.

Today is a day to show that we care for those around us, to give freely of our time and energy in gratitude to the community that sustains us. In turn this burns away any debts we have in this realm or another.

3 TojDays carrying the number 3 can seem challenging, especially is the focus is outwards. The strength of 3 days is found in the inner world, and combined with the nawal Toj, would suggest looking within to serve.

In principle, making offerings to pay off our debts is a good thing. We give something back to the community that sustains us through the sacrifice of our time, our energy or our resources. The wheel turns, we give and take, and usually end up in balance. However, today is a day where the wheel may have become stuck. It may seem today that nothing is good enough. The sacrifices or payments made today may be challenged, blocked or obstructed. Ceremonies made today may have unintended consequences, or may just fail to give the desired result. It is just a day to do something else. Service to your community may be ineffective, you might find the work you do undone soon afterwards. It is a day to tread carefully, avoid making debts and leave the payment for another day.

Days which carry the number 3 highlight inner work, both within the home and within the self. This is a day to avoid the external transactions and focus on what you owe to yourself. Take some time to give yourself what you need, to replenish what has been spent and acknowledge what you owe to your own spirit. As the saying goes, “you can’t pour from an empty cup.” By going within today, you may find other ways in which you can be of service to the world.

M42 (and M43) The Orion Nebula

There are various myths about the creation which link with the number 3. One is that at the time of creation, three stone jumped out of the fireplace and formed the new world. These three stones are called the hearthstones, and are still seen in many Maya homes today, on the fire supporting the tortilla griddle. From an astronomical point of view, the stones are the stars Alnitak, Saiph and Rigel in the constellation we call Orion, and the Smoky Fireplace is the Great Orion Nebula (M42)

9 TojThis is a day on which women make offerings for the gift of their children, and where men make offerings for the women. It is a day to acknowledge the sacrifices made by the women in your life.

The combination of the number 9 with the nawal of payment gives rise to two important aspects of today. Firstly, the number 9 represents life itself, and our ability to reproduce. Toj days are days on which we make ceremonies, offerings or payments and, as such, today is a day on which offerings are made for fertility, for the ability to reproduce. In particular this aspect is pertinent to women, it is a day of women’s ceremonies, a day of thanksgiving for the divine feminine essence that all carry. The second aspect could be seen more from a male perspective, although not exclusively. This is a day to make offerings to the women in your life for the sacrifices they have made in order to sustain life. Again, it is a thanksgiving for all that the divine feminine, and those who embody it, bring into our lives.

The energy of 9 Toj may represent what you might consider to be a life debt. Whilst the payment may involve the use of your energy, the results of making a payment today may be very powerful. When life debts are resolved, the momentum to move forward increases. Today is a day when the “karmic cashiers” are open to receiving the payment, and that payment will be accepted on your behalf.

One project which I find particularly inspiring is ODIM. Within their well organised structure, they run several community health and education programs, one of which is called “Healthy Mommy and Me”. This particular program helps to educate women with regards to child nutrition and help combat one of the biggest issues in Guatemala, childhood malnutrition. As an example of the impact this program is having, 90% of the children whose mothers graduated from this program were of a normal weight for their height, compared to only 35% as the rate for Solola in general. The number nine is very special indeed. It is the number of lunations in the human gestation period and in the sacred calendar. The sacred calendar is known as a calendar of life, and it is women that give life. As such the number nine is seen as the number of life and the number of the divine feminine. It gives all that it is attached to a strong feminine presence and is a day on which women may wish to give thanks for their gifts.

2 TojIf there was ever a day of selfless acts it would be 2 Toj, as both Toj and energy of the number 2 have elements of self sacrifice. Whilst Toj implies payment on behalf of the community, the 2 particularly highlights relationships.

The nawal Toj can act as a barometer of our energy. If we fall out of harmony, within our family, relationships and community, it is sometimes the nawal Toj which brings us a message in the form of an illness to remind us that we have debts to pay. These debts may be a stagnation of energy, where we have taken something without exchange, and may be resolved through simple acts within our community which keep us healthy and keep the cycle of energy moving. In this way, Toj can be seen as one kind of healing day, where that healing may be effected through our selfless actions, or through our offerings within ceremony.

The number two can highlight polarities, in one way representing relationships, but in another, also drawing on polar aspects of the nawal it is attached to. This generally makes the days carrying the number 2 stronger than would be expected. The polarities of Toj may be both paying back, and collecting debts. Collection of debts may not be the most pleasant of activities, but it allows others a channel to bring themselves back into balance. This could be a day to remind others of what may be owed, as well as paying back our own debts. We keep the wheel of energy turning and as a result keep ourselves healthy.

On the most pleasant side of this energy, it could be a great day to spend time doing something special on behalf of someone you love, especially if you need to restore balance in a relationship. That said, especially today, random acts of kindness towards your family, community or even complete strangers may go a long way to paying off any karmic debt you might have incurred. 8 TojThe day 8 Toj is one of the most important days of ceremony, with the nawal Toj representing the fire ceremony itself. This is a day to make your payments in order to sustain life and good health.

Life proceeds through energetic interactions. We consume energy in one form or another and then we return it, often in a different form. Even when it comes down to the air we breathe or the water we drink, there is some form of exchange going on. To come to a state of harmony within the world that we live, balance must be achieved. In this modern world, sometimes we defer these debts, whether they are financial or not. We take something, often with the intention of resolving the imbalance as soon as we can, but then end up forgetting these debts, especially the small. Individually this is not always too much of a problem,we can proceed with a small imbalance, but many small items eventually cause us to fall out of harmony. This in turn may lead to a state of disease and an illness may occur.

Toj days remind us to keep our promises, to make our payments in whatever form they might take. They might be physical or financial, or they might be words of gratitude, whether to our physical providers or to our environment. These simple acts help to keep us healthy, it is in our own interests to make these exchanges, to return what we have used.

The day 8 Toj is a day about resolving all debts in whatever form they take. It can be a day when we ceremonially make offerings to the fire on behalf of ourselves and our families. It is a day on which we can make a payment for future goodwill, by acting in service to our community. If there was ever a day to do a good deed, it is today, although don’t expect to be thanked for it. The reward will come in its own time.

The number 8 is considered to be a number of wholeness. It can be seen as birth (1) and death (7) combined to represent the whole cycle of the soul. It can also be seen as the point where the four first men who raised the sky from the sea were joined by their wives and the world become whole. It is the most common day for ceremonies to be made, it is still in the balanced range of numbers and is an even number, which is also considered fortunate. As this wholeness represents every aspect of the energy of the day with which it is coupled, it is the wholeness of the nawal that is addressed in ceremony.

The trecena of Toj is a time to make our payments, to balance out and give back for all that we have received, a time to resolve our debts.

Within the village of San Pablo la Laguna, there is an organisation doing great work. They are called ODIM and are specialising in medical and educational services. During the pandemic restrictions, they helped feed many people, but this is in addition to their regular, long term work there. 1 TojThe day 1 Toj is a day to begin to restore the balance in life. If there is a debt, either financial or energetic, which has been weighing heavily for some time, today is a day to start to do something about it.

Following on from the possibility of receiving the great bounty on 13 Q’anil, finishing up the trecena of Ajmak, we move into the trecena of Toj. Sometimes the trecena may have a theme such as creativity (B’atz) or unconditional love (Tz’i), sometimes it will be a little tougher, such as forgiveness (Ajmak) or payment (Toj.) It is not that these things are bad, they are just a little less inviting, the “work” aspect of life, but necessary work it is.

Today is the day to start this process of rebalancing. It is a day to begin the repayment of outstanding debts. This may be financial, it may be through work, or it may be through charitable means. Toj is the nawal of the sacred fire, and it is to the fire that we make offerings in order to burn away what would commonly be known as karmic debts. In this way we restore balance, we bring our accounts back to zero.

Toj carries with it a form of divine protection, which is enhanced through selfless acts. These acts might involve a sacrifice of our time or energy in order to strengthen our community. We can choose to act or we can choose to ignore, but be aware – ignoring an opportunity to make a payment on a Toj day might bring a ill fortune, the removal of the protection. Payment should be made with an open heart, thanks might not be quickly forthcoming, and may not come at all. Your sacrifice could be something as simple as picking up litter in your neighbourhood, it doesn’t have to be something elaborate.

The number 1 is representative of the seed, of unity. It represents birth and beginnings. It is a low and odd number, which usually represents something challenging. However, the seed can grow into a mighty tree, it is full of potential. It just needs the correct nutrients and conditions to germinate and develop, just as sometimes we need encouragement to develop our ideas.
