The nawal Aj is a solid and dependable energy, helpful and supportive. As a representation of the spinal column, Aj is the one which holds everything in its rightful place. It holds us erect and connects us with the energies from above and below. We also use the word “backbone” to represent honour, integrity and courage. All of these qualities can be seen in the energy of Aj.

12 Aj is a day to draw on your life experience to nourish your community, family and home. Your past experiences can bring you strength and courage. They help you to stand up for what is right should you need to. They also provide examples that you can pass on to others within your community to help them to grow. This is a day when your life experience clearly shows you how to do the right thing. It brings courage to support those around you, bringing harmony into both home and community. It is certainly a day to stand up as an experienced pillar of the community.

The nawal Aj is related to many things which generally revolve around leadership on an earthly level. It is also known as the cornstalk, sometimes the staff of life. It represents the spinal column within the body, which allows us to stand tall, proud and brave. As the cornstalk, it has its roots in the Earth, and its head in the sky. If we wish to lead in a just manner, we should cultivate our connection with the Heart of the Sky and the Heart of the Earth.

Aj is an authority, it is gentle, yet noble. It works quietly for the community it leads. It does not seek the limelight. This is a day that seeks sustenance for its people, that keeps everything in its rightful place. It is a day when we ask for the courage and bravery to stand up straight and tall, to do the right thing.

The Number 12

The number 12 is the penultimate number. In some ways, it can be seen as the last Earthly number, the number 13 representing the spirit world. We travelled through the mortal world with 1 through 6, then the other world with 7 through 12. In this way, 12 can be seen as a point of bringing all of the experiences into one bundle for presentation to the spirit world as we step into 13. As such, the number 12 brings a wealth of experience into one place, it is rather like writing an autobiography. It is totality, all that is, brought together.

6 KejStrength and stability could be seen as the key messages of today. It brings an excellent opportunity to harness the lively and vital energy of the wilderness.

 

It is an interesting experience to observe the qualities of each trecena through its individual components. The trecena of Iq’ proves to live up to its unpredictable nature once again today. We might have experienced challenging days on 3 K’at and 5 Kame. These are favourable days with challenging numbers. However, the high-energy nawales of Kan and Kej combine with very favourable numbers to bring them stability. Just as 4 Kan brings the wisdom down to Earth, 6 Kej stabilises strength.

Kej may often be referred to as “deer”, but in the K’ichean dictionary I have it is translated as horse. The energy of Kej certainly has similarities with that of the horse. It has a great capacity to carry with its strength. However, it can also be stubborn. It has a noble freedom about it and may be difficult to control, giving those who try to do so a wild ride. However, today is different. Today it is possible to bring that strength and determination into clear focus. That energy can be used to lead if necessary, especially in matters of family. Of course, the place where this is felt the most is in the wilderness, where this energy is the greatest.

The day 6 Kej is a day to draw on the power of the natural world to bring stability to your life and vitality to your family. As such it could be a great day to take a walk in the woods with your loved ones. You should all feel the benefit.

It is the nawal of nature, of the wilderness and it is this power that it draws on. The animal totem of Kej is the deer, but if you have fragile, new-born Bambi in mind, think again. This is the majestic stag, standing on the mountain surveying his domain. Whilst most nawales are not necessarily engendered, Kej is most definitely masculine. Both men and women that carry Kej as their nawal have great strength, although the men tend to hide their strength more. Kej women are particularly driven, resourceful and brave, sometimes to the point of being rather dominant. All radiate an aura of nobility, people tend to look to them to lead.

Kej is the nawal of the Mayan “religion”, a day of spiritual leaders, of shaman and of priests. It is these leaders who understand how to read the messages from the natural world, who help to keep our existence in balance with nature. It is a day to connect with the wilderness and draw the power of the natural world into you, to harmonise and replenish.

The Number Six

The number six is said to be the number of ultimate stability. It is the first of the three middle numbers of the cycle, the balance point. Thus, ceremonies are often made on six days thanks to their conducive energy.

The number 6 carries the qualities of the number 4, but has an extra axis. If we think of the number four representing the cardinal points, the number six adds a vertical axis to these. It brings in the Heart of the Sky and the Heart of the Earth. The number six has the stability of the number four embellished by the masculine and feminine principals. If the number four represents the physical world and the number 6 represents the physical world animated by the life force energy.

Thus, it also represents family, relating to the six qualities which hold families together – health, understanding, property, employment, friendship and actions.

5 AjThe day 5 Aj is a great day to be doing some form of work on behalf of your community. Your work and your input will bring great nourishment to those around you.

 

Putting energy into the sustenance of our home or community benefits ourselves and those around us. The day 5 Aj brings together these aspects to give a day where this type of work flourishes.

The nawal Aj is related to the spinal column. It holds us upright, brings us the strength and courage to do the right thing. It holds everything in its rightful place. However, it may not have always been like that. It gains strength as it is used, the wisdom it holds comes through experience. Whilst Aj is very much a leadership nawal, it is almost reluctant in stepping forward, preferring to guide gently rather than exercise the authority it also carries. These qualities of Aj are a blessing for all and are achieved through the experience of the work of life.

It is a day for selfless work, a day within the Toj trecena, where we have the opportunity to pay back the support our families, friends and communities show to us. However, it may also be a day when efforts to guide or lead may be rather more challenging than expected, especially if you feel yourself rushing into things.

It is representative of the hand with its five digits. It is with our hands that we work, and with what we earn we pay our debts. Five is also a number that relates to the sacred fire where we pay our debts with offerings and prayers. Five might be so busy working that it fails to remember what it is working for. It can also signify that what it is attached to becomes work, or is “hard work”.

12 KejThis is a day on which life experience empowers leadership or resolve issues. However, it may be important to understand where those experiences are useful and where they are not.

In order to fulfil a position of leadership within our community, we have to use our life experience. That is often the reason for which leaders are chosen. Their life experience and skill set fit the challenges faced by the community. The energy of this day strongly suggests reviewing and collating the experiences of life in order to move forward. This may represent something like being invited to join a committee as an experienced mentor in a particular field.

However, the determination associated with the nawal Kej may become inflexibility when it comes to the attachment to “the way it has always been done.” Strength is built on experience. But, understanding how to adapt those experiences to become relevant as society evolves is the real goal. The day 12 Kej has a very strong energy,  with regard to both the nawal and the number. This energy may bring you determination, but be aware of where determination becomes stubbornness.

You may find that a walk in the wilderness, or other connection with nature, acts as a very positive recharge for your energy. It may help you to balance the strength of this day and assist with decision making. Possibly it will bring some perspective to the more determined ideas. This might be especially true if that forest is one familiar to you from your past. Perhaps a journey in a familiar wilderness will remind you of something that in turn brings you strength.

11 AjThe steadfast moved by the spontaneous could be a theme for this day. The supportive energy of Aj may bring greater harmony to the community by inspiration outside its usual boundaries.

The nawal Aj could be seen as a “safe pair of hands”. Aj days bring a focus on our homes and communities and the harmony within them. For this harmony to exist a certain amount of control is required. This may be through rules and regulations which can sometimes bring out the authoritarian side of Aj. However, Aj would argue that these rules are for the good of all, even if we feel a little restricted. Sometimes it can be difficult to get Aj to move especially when it might result in a change to the status quo. Just as Aj can represent the strength and support of the spinal column, cane or cornstalk, it can also become inflexible.

However, today might bring a surprise in these areas as the energy of the number 11 influences Aj. The 11 brings with it a changeability. It listens to its intuition and acts accordingly, sometimes moving off the logical path. Although this may seem chaotic to the external observer, innovation follows.

Bringing these two rather opposing energies together can create a very interesting situation. The energy of the 11 might persuade Aj to move from its position. Things which may normally be considered inflexible or dependable may act unpredictably. It may certainly be a day on which the “old guard” is challenged by new ideas. In order to bring harmony to the community, the phrase “because that’s how we’ve always done it” needs to be challenged. The number 11 is a high and odd number. This gives it some rather challenging properties, although it can come good in the end. Imagine you visit Ireland and are transfixed by the green of the hills. Then you go to Morocco and are awed by the red of the buildings. Then you go to the Caribbean and are moved by the turquoise sea. You return home and paint a beautiful picture using those colours. When you were in Ireland you didn’t know you were going to paint that masterpiece. You may not have even known why you were there.  This is how 11 works. You are sure you need to be doing something, but unsure why. You are collecting experience through many wanderings.

5 KejThis is a great day to get the hard work done. You have the strength and determination of Kej attached to that which you work for. However, make sure you remember to make time to recharge with a connection to nature.

The nawal Kej brings strength and vitality which helps us to draw from the wilderness. It brings out our leadership from within us, helping to assure us of our decisions. Kej acts as a spiritual leader charging forward on behalf of its people. It is determined to bring out the best of the world for them, whether real or perceived. Kej represents the priest, with concern for more than just the physical well-being of the people it leads. It does what it does with a divine conviction, which can lead it to be a little overbearing.

Here we see it connected with the number 5 which is representative of work. As a consequence, this can be an exceptionally empowered work day as Kej comes through to bring you determination in whatever your chosen work is. However, this determination can lead to trampling over others in the drive to achieve a goal, which should be avoided. It may require a little reigning in of the pushy energy in order to avoid possible confrontation.

One way to balance the strength is through connection to the wilderness. This is a great day for working in the natural environment, the work will be blessed by Kej, helping you to tune in to what you are doing. It is likely that environmental work may take some effort to get going, but once it does you may be well rewarded. 4 AjThis is a day to put your energy into meeting the physical needs of your family and community. It is a day to focus on supporting people through real-world issues.

The combination of the noble authority of the nawal Aj and the stability of the number 4 should give rise to a dependable and solid day. This is a day of support and courage, particularly for those who take the lead.

There is possibly no greater steadying influence greater than that of the nawal Aj. Aj is the one who keeps order, the pillar which both supports and sustains. It keeps everything in its rightful place to bring harmony and growth to the community it supports. Aj brings leadership qualities of the most altruistic kind. It provides an energy which organises to ensure that the community is cared for.

Today it is combined with the number 4. This brings with it an essence of stability, particularly in the Earthly plane. This represents the most basic level of material existence. This could be seen as the arrival of of a stable leader who will work to ensure that the most basic of material needs are fulfilled. It does not necessarily take into account any other planes of existence, the focus is purely in our world.

Four represents the cardinal points, the four colours of maize, the four carriers of the year, the two equinoxes and two solstices, as well as midnight, sunrise, midday and sunset. The number four is representative of the four first men. It was said to be they who raised the sky from the sea to create the world we live on. In Mayan myth it is four pillars that support the sky from the Earth. As you can imagine, four is a number which represents stability, a good, down-to-Earth number.

11 KejThis is a day to embrace the wild within yourself and others. Wandering in the forest may provide strong experiences which you incorporate at a later time. Follow your instincts in the wilderness today,  rather than a set path. You may find new strength in your discoveries.

The strength of the nawal Kej combines with the strong, spontaneous energy of the number 11. This is a day to be aware of the strength of actions and which direction they are heading towards.

The energy of the number 11 can give rise to strong and highly unpredictable days. On these days you might not know why you are doing something, but you do it with absolute certainty. Today it is combined with the determination from the nawal Kej. This may lead to an even higher degree of certainty that you are going in the correct direction. The nawal Kej is the nawal of strength itself, and it may be all too easy to apply too much.

From the idea of Kej representing either a deer or a horse (as it is translated in modern-day K’ichean) this could be seen as a stampede. Force and energy with no particular direction. This is a day where you may need to be more aware than usual of what is going on around you. Prepare to take evasive action if necessary. Trying to stop the stampede will not work. There is too much determination involved, but you can get out of its way. Of course, it is not only the actions of others which carry this energy. It is a day to be aware of your determination towards making something happen. Are you aware of the direction in which it is taking you?

10 AjThis is a day to join hands with your community and bring harmony into your environment. The strong and social energy of the number 10 combines with Aj, the nawal of authority and social leadership.

The nawal Aj is seen as a beneficial nawal. Whilst it is a leader, it has passed the stages of control and manipulation. Aj is wise and noble, it is gentle and respected, primarily for the benefits it brings to the community. It represents the harmony within the home. This comes through Aj’s connections with the Heart of the Sky and the Heart of the Earth. It brings integrity, and the courage to do the right thing. Accordingly, is for the good of all, even when that may be a difficult decision.

Today we see the energy of nawal Aj combined with the energy of the number 10, representing society and community. It can be seen as the fingers of two sets of hands joining together. This can be seen in many ways. These include the shaking of hands representing agreement and friendship and one hand guiding and helping the other forward. It could also be seen as one hand extending to help the bearer of the other up. It shows the benefit gained by all through co-operation and friendliness.

The day 10 Aj is a day to remember that your actions shape the community that you live within. Today is about actively being a member of the community you wish to create, to offer your hand or your assistance where it is required. 4 KejToday the strength of Kej should be particularly useful today. This day can represent a strong foundation, or an energy of bringing strength and stability to a situation. It is a day to step forward and take charge of matters if they need resolving.

The strength that brings stability is especially highlighted today as both the nawal Kej and the number 4 combine their properties. Each can be seen as a representation of the four pillars, keeping everything in its rightful place.

The nawal Kej is known for its strength, which sometimes can become a little domineering. It is not necessarily meant that way. After all, it is a nawal of spiritual leadership and truly has the interests of its followers at heart.

Kej brings the strength to make a difference. However, the number 4 tempers it to bring this strength in a carefully measured, balanced way. It is strength empowered by the qualities of the four directions – vitality, wisdom, spirit and healing – which brings the material world into being. This day represents the four first men, Balam Kitze, Balam Acab, Majutujaj and Balam Ikim. These were the four first humans created and were seen as the founders of the patrilineages. As such they formed the base for all who followed them, and their stability allowed the human race to flourish.

Equally, the nawal Kej is the representative of the natural world and Kej days are excellent days to spend in the wilderness. If you are feeling a little weakened or out of balance, today is a powerful day to take a walk in the woods in order to re-energise yourself and bring yourself back into stability.

The Nawal Kej

Kej is possibly the strongest of the nawales, it is powerful, but in a different way to Kan. Kej is energetic, lively and determined. It is the nawal of nature, of the wilderness and it is this power that it draws on. The animal totem of Kej is the deer, but if you have fragile, new-born Bambi in mind, think again. This is the majestic stag, standing on the mountain surveying his domain. Whilst most nawales are not necessarily engendered, Kej is most definitely masculine. Both men and women that carry Kej as their nawal have great strength, although the men tend to hide their strength more. Kej women are particularly driven, resourceful and brave, sometimes to the point of being rather dominant. All radiate an aura of nobility, people tend to look to them to lead.

Kej is the nawal of the Mayan “religion”, a day of spiritual leaders, of shaman and of priests. It is these leaders who understand how to read the messages from the natural world, who help to keep our existence in balance with nature. It is a day to connect with the wilderness and draw the power of the natural world into you, to harmonise and replenish.

The Number Four

The number 4 is very important within Mayan mythology. Four represents the cardinal points, the four colours of maize, the four carriers of the year, the two equinoxes and two solstices, as well as midnight, sunrise, midday and sunset. The number four is representative of the four first men. It was said to be they who raised the sky from the sea to create the world we live on. In Mayan myth it is four pillars that support the sky from the Earth. As you can imagine, four is a number which represents stability, a good, down-to-Earth number.
