12 E’ (31st March 2023)

The nawal of exploration and journeys combines today with the number representing life experience. Prior knowledge may facilitate your journey today.

The energy of the nawal E’ may be impulsive, its drive to discover and explore pushing boundaries of what is acceptable or safe. Sometimes the greatest discoveries come through this type of behaviour, although it can also bring trouble. Today, past experience may help you to understand clearly which boundaries are worth pushing, and which ones are better not crossed. Fortune may favour the bold, but today it should be tempered with the wisdom of experience.

Likewise, that experience may help to solve issues which hold back progress on your voyage of discovery. This is a day to draw on what you have learnt through your journey of life in order to clear you path of obstructions, or call the skill you have built up over the years to navigate your way through difficult conditions.

Nawal E’ represents the journey of discovery, the life path in both its physical and spiritual aspects. E’ is the explorer, it craves novelty. It inspires travel to understand different cultures and ways of life, it is a seeker of experience. It can be a thrill seeker, and sometimes will take risks to understand what it is examining. Whilst it gains experience and understanding through physical travel, E’ also drives us to explore our inner world, helping us to understand our own minds and hearts, and those of others. E’ sometimes creates a restlessness, the desire to find new things within the world means that E’ finds it difficult to sit still.

E’ can sometimes cause us to explore simply for the sake of exploration, we seek the new experience because it is there. This can give rise to a lack of direction, aimless wandering. However, even in its wanderings E’ is discovering. It may not know exactly where it is going, but it will when it gets there. In it’s best aspect, E’ seeks out knowledge and experience in order to form an understanding which brings wisdom. E’ enjoys sharing the wisdom gained with its peers, for the enrichment of the community.

E’ is another of the classic  carriers of the year, or year lords. It is said that E’ years tend to be some of the more gentle and favourable years. E’  is seen as a good natured nawal. E’ days are considered to be good days on which to travel and explore, whether that be externally or internally. It is a day to find or remember your path, a day to ask for your path to be cleared of obstructions, and a day to ask for guidance and protection on your path.

The number 12 is the penultimate number. In some ways it can be seen as the last Earthly number, the number 13 representing the spirit world. We travelled through the mortal world with 1 through 6, then the other world with 7 through 12. In this way 12 can be seen as a point of bringing all of the experiences into one bundle for presentation to the spirit world as we step into 13. As such, the number 12 brings a wealth of experience into one place, it is rather like writing an autobiography. It is totality, all that is, brought together.

5 E’ (11th March 2023)

5 E'The day 5 E’ should be a good day for your journey, although it might have a few unexpected bumps along the way. It could be particularly good if this journey is aligned with your life path or work.

Although it could be a bit of an challenge at times, eventually you should get to your destination, possibly making some unexpected discoveries along the way as a result of the effort you put in. You can overcome the obstacles with a little hard work, and the reward will be a great advancement.

The Sacred Mayan calendar is often said to be a calendar of human life, and parts of it can be seen as a microcosm of the human body. The number five is one of these parts. It is representative of the hand with it’s five digits. It is with our hands that we work, and with what we earn for that work that we pay our debts. Five is also a number that relates to the sacred fire where we pay our debts with offerings and prayers. Five might be so busy working that it fails to remember what it is working for. It can also signify that what it is attached to becomes work, or is “hard work”.

11 E’ (19th February 2023)

11 E'With both 11 and E’ representing the wanderer, today might feel both restless, and directionless. It is a day where energy and drive to explore is strong, as are the distractions along the path.

The strength of the number 11 may lead to some very impulsive urges on normal occasions, and when combined with the nawal E’ this could result in some rather randomised journeys. These are the days when you have a strong desire to turn down that road, the one that you have always wondered where it goes, but never travelled it. You could end up lost or delayed, although this is of little importance, you have to find out what is there. This may be in both the physical and metaphorical sense.

Whilst this energy does not give a great deal of focus, you may find that this random exploration gives rise to experiences or discoveries you had not considered before. In the cross of numbers, the number 11 leads to the number 6, and so it is possible that something that you find through your wanderings today helps to stabilise a greater plan in the future.

Planning your journey down to the last detail may prove a frustrating exercise as the plans may change as soon as they are made. This is the day on which “going with the flow” may be the only reasonable option.

The number 11 is a high and odd number. This gives it some rather challenging properties, although it can come good in the end. Imagine you visit Ireland and are transfixed by the green of the hills, then you go to Morocco and are awed by the red of the buildings, then you go to the Caribbean and are moved by the turquoise sea. You return home and paint a beautiful picture using those colours. When you were in Ireland you didn’t know you were going to paint that masterpiece, you may not have even known why you were there.  This is how 11 works. You are sure you need to be doing something, but unsure why. You are collecting experience through many wanderings.

4 E’ (30th January 2023)

4 EThe energy of the journey of discovery comes down to Earth today as the nawal E’ combines with the number 4. This is a day which highlights the physical journey.

E’ days always have an auspicious energy about them when it comes to travelling. On E’ days our life path makes its presence known, and sometimes this is not what we were planning at that point with our conscious minds. Synchronicity steps in and puts us back on track. Maybe we see a signpost, or maybe we meet someone on the road that fulfils that role and takes us in a different direction.

Today, the combination with the number 4 brings that concept very much into the physical realm. It is a day of physical journeys and to pay attention to the physical markers on your path. E’ is the discoverer, not just of the way or the path, but also of the understanding of how things work. As such today is a great day to get really grounded with your understanding of where you are going and why. It may be a day on which your physical destination helps to ground the discoveries you have made so far along your journey.

The number 4 is very important within Mayan mythology. Four represents the cardinal points, the four colours of maize, the four carriers of the year, the two equinoxes and two solstices, as well as midnight, sunrise, midday and sunset. The number four is representative of the four first men, who raised the sky from the sea to create the world we live on. In Mayan myth it is four pillars that support the sky from the Earth. As you can imagine, four is a number which represents stability, a solar number. Even though it is still low, it is thought of as a good number.

10 E’ (10th January 2023)

10 E'The nawal of discovery joins with the number of co-operation and community. This is the day of the joint venture, the communal exploration to new places and new concepts.

The day 10 E’ can be seen as a day to explore your role within your chosen community, to bring clarity and understanding to your life purpose. It can also be a day on which your community may wish to look at the direction it is heading. It should be a great day for an adventure with friends, where you can all expect to learn something profound.

When I call the day E’ in ceremony, I often talk about how our paths have woven themselves together, to bring each person in the ceremony to this point in space, at this point in time, in order to have this experience. The energy of the ceremony is created by the people who participate in it, it is a co-operative collaboration through which we discover something new. Of course this applies to far more than just ceremony, our paths connect and weave with the people around us in this present moment. It is a day to celebrate our path together, how we all cooperate to enrich each others lives through the experiences we provide for each other.

The number 10 is another number which demonstrates the connection between the sacred calendar and the human body. As five represents one hand, ten represents two hands coming together. This can be seen as the shaking of hands creating agreement between people. Ten is seen as a good number, a number of community and the laws of society, of people acting in harmony with each other.

3 E’ (21st December 2022) – Solstice

3 E'The nawal E’ governs exploration and discovery, and this happens on the journey, on the road it represents. However, today, the number 3 may bring challenges to physical journeys.

The nawal E’ gives a restlessness which is cured through taking voyages of discovery. E’ drives us to understand how our world, different people and different societies work. This usually happens through travel as we enrich both our knowledge and experience of the world around us. However, E’ also governs our own life journey, our internal process that we move through as we travel through our life. It is as much about our life path as it is the physical journeys we undertake.

Today we see it combined with the number 3, a number which can be seen to bring instability and challenge to what it is attached to, especially in the external world. This is perhaps one of the least ideal days on which to make a physical journey, the possibility obstruction and delays may be high. This is a day to be looking inwards, to focus on understanding yourself through your inner journey. It may prove more fruitful than a journey on the road today.

The solstices are very important points of the year energetically and it is always my pleasure to make ceremonies on these days. What we call Winter solstice here in the northern hemisphere is perhaps my favourite, with the midwinter sun rising over the lake. It is a beautiful event, and reminds us of the return of the light to the world as our days begin to get longer.

This year, the solstice falls on the day 3 E’ within the Chol Q’ij. E’ days are days of exploration and journey, representing our path. In combination with the number 3, this highlights the inner path and on this day, representing the return of the light, could be an excellent day to ask for the illumination of our inner path.

This year I have felt a desire to share this ceremony, to include those friends from around the world who have participated in ceremony here in my garden in San Pablo. Those who are here at the lake are welcome to attend in person. I will do what I can to make this happen, but please be patient as internet connections here are not always as reliable as you may be accustomed to. I will do my best to position the camera and microphone so that you can fully connect with the sounds and sights of the ceremony and the fire. Perhaps you can even make your own fire at home and make your offerings to your fire as we journey through the nawales. There is no fee for this, all are welcome, although if you wish to make a donation towards the costs of the materials, please feel free to do so. You can make a donation through this link: https://paypal.me/MarkElmy

The ceremony will start at 6am and will take around 2-3 hours, as I call in the directions, my teachers, ceremonial sites and the essences of the 20 nawales. I will petition each of the nawales for assistance in this time. If you would like to attend, you can find the Zoom details below, or come along in person if you are here at the lake.

There are various myths about the creation which link with the number 3. One is that at the time of creation, three stone jumped out of the fireplace and formed the new world. These three stones are called the hearthstones, and are still seen in many Maya homes today, on the fire supporting the tortilla griddle. From an astronomical point of view, the stones are the stars Alnitak, Saiph and Rigel in the constellation we call Orion, and the Smoky Fireplace is the Great Orion Nebula (M42)

The number 3 is still in the low end of the range of numbers. It does not have much energy yet, and it is also an odd number. It can represent the home, relating to the three hearthstones laid by the creators, and this is probably a good focus for a 3 day. However, it is possibly the most troublesome of the numbers to deal with, it lacks stability and represents challenges and obstructions. The number three brings up internal/external dilemma. The lack of stability in the physical, external world that it brings suggests that the more appropriate action is to look to the internal world, both of the home and of yourself.

9 E’ (1st December 2022)

9 E'The nawal E’ represents the journey of discovery in all senses. Whilst these are generally good days for physical journeys, today may have more emphasis on your life path.

The sacred calendar is used in many ways, for divination, to help integrate our actions with the energies of our world and solar system. It assists us with understanding how to employ natural timing into our everyday lives, to make our lives easier by using favourable energies to propel our journey. The calendar is circular, it is cyclic. There is no end and there is no beginning, however, there are cycles which use the calendar for their timing. These may be personal cycles, such as a cycle of gestation of your child, or they may be more societal.

Yesterday, a new cycle began, a new ceremonial cycle. Today is the day where where the energy of E’ is here to help us to see and understand our life path. If you are lost, stranded or just plain stuck, this is the day to ask of nawal E’ “show me where I am supposed to be going.”  Being as the number 9 also represents the feminine, this may be the day to consult women in your life in particular for the answers to questions about your life path. E’ may answer, through conversations with others, through “little signs”. It is the day to see where life wants to take you.

The number nine is very special indeed. It is the number of lunations in the human gestation period and in the sacred calendar. The sacred calendar is known as a calendar of life, and it is women that give life. As such the number nine is seen as the number of life and the number of the divine feminine. It gives all that it is attached to a strong feminine presence and is a day on which women may wish to give thanks for their gifts.

2 E’ (11th November 2022)

2 E'The nawal E’ represents our journey of exploration through our lives, and when coupled with the number representing duality, could bring a day of big choices regarding future direction.

The nawal E’ often drives people to test the boundaries or take chances, after all, without a little leap of faith we don’t really live. We step out onto our path, whether is is a physical journey, spiritual path, relationship or even career in order to experience and grow. We don’t necessarily know the route we will take on that journey, and sometimes we might not know exactly our destination, or the destination changes as we journey. The important thing is that we move, as there is no life without movement.

The energy of 2 E’ may give an indecisive nature when it comes to your future path, and may even be possible that there are two clear options. The influence of E’ will inspire to move forward, not wishing to wait, which could create an inner dilemma between the hesitant energy of the 2 and the bold energy of E’.

Which path to take may also be influence by the other meanings of the number 2, relationships and self sacrifice. This is a day where the most productive and enlightening course of action is truly selfless. Allow you relationships to guide you towards your decision, which may involve a little sacrifice on your part. However, the good fortune associated with road would suggest a favourable outcome. If in doubt, let love decide your path.

Although it is a low number it has surprising strength as it is said to be able to call upon both aspects or polarities of what it is attached to. It is said to be the number of lovers, it signifies relationships and self-sacrifice. Whilst it can lend itself to mediation, seeing both sides of the story, it also can be indecisive.

1 E’ (2nd October 2022)

1 E'We have cleared the trecena of Kawok, and emerged as our new selves, fresh and vital, ready for the next journey. Here is the start, the beginning of the road which leads us forward

The last time we experienced E’, it was as a finishing point, 7 E’, the end of the road. Of course we never stop walking, we keep moving forward and today brings the beginning of our new adventure. We might think of it as sleeping and waking. This is what the trecenas of Kame and Kawok have brought to us. Now we have awoken, revitalised and ready to start our new journey.

This is a day of new beginnings, in some ways more so than other days carrying the 1 energy. It is the day of new experiences, new direction. We might imagine ourselves just opening our eyes for the first time and being inspired to explore this world  that we have been reborn into.

The energy of this day certainly lends itself to taking the first step in a new journey or adventure, trying something new or exploring a new direction in life. The day itself might not actually have much movement involved, these are the first teetering steps of the new born, you may need some encouragement to move forward. It is the day to initiate your travel, perhaps buying tickets for a journey you have been planning.

The number 1 is representative of the seed, of unity. It represents birth and beginnings. It is a low and odd number, which usually represents something challenging. However, the seed can grow into a mighty tree, it is full of potential. It just needs the correct nutrients and conditions to germinate and develop, just as sometimes we need encouragement to develop our ideas.

I am currently working on my 2023 calendar and it will be available in November. This time around it will be receiving an upgrade that I think you will all appreciate – more to come when I reveal it in November! As always, printed versions, in English, will be available locally in Guatemala, and pdf versions in both English and Spanish will be available for the rest of the world.

In the meantime, if you are the more technically minded I have created a plugin for Google calendar which will enable you to track the days of the sacred calendar on your smartphone. I am currently updating it so that it will also give a summary of the energy of the day. In this way you can ensure that your activities are aligned to the most conducive energies! It is available for purchase here.
