Here are the days of the Chol Q’ij mapped onto the Gregorian month of September 2024.
Astronomically, there are two interesting events this month. First, a partial lunar eclipse will occur on 3 Toj, 18th September, at 02:44 UTC. This is more of a penumbral eclipse with a very small part of the moon showing the red colour of the Earth’s shadow. It may be rather difficult to actually observe, there may not be much noticeable difference. The equinox will then fall a few days later on 7 Aj (22nd September) at 06.43 Guatemala time (12.43 UTC).
For planet spotters, early September may be interesting. Mercury will reach its greatest Western elongation, the furthest apparent distance from the Sun in the morning sky. The closer to the equator, the better your chances of seeing Mercury, but you may see it low on the horizon just before dawn on 3 Toj (5th September). A few days later, on 6 Kawok (8th September) Saturn will be at opposition. This means that Saturn will be directly overhead at midnight. This can be one of the best times to observe or photograph Saturn through a telescope as it is at its closest point to the Earth and fully illuminated by the Sun.
