Here are the days of the Chol Q’ij mapped onto the Gregorian month of December 2022.

Astronomically, this month again brings us two meteor showers, the Geminid meteor shower on the 13th/14th and the Ursids on the 21st/22nd. The Geminids tend to be the more spectacular of the two showers, but will be washed out by the light of the full moon. The Ursids will coincide with the new moon, but are not known to be an impressive display.

Of course we also have solstice occurring, on the 21st at  21.40 UTC. We will also once again be welcoming the planet Venus back to our skies, this time as the evening apparition. According to the Dresden Codex, this should happen on 6 Iq’ (11th December) when you should be able to see venus shining brightly about the western horizon just after sunset.

I have now finished creating my 2023 wall calendar. This year I have decided to change the format a little. I have been trying to integrate the rhythm of the Maya calendars with the Gregorian calendar to help people to bridge between the two. There is an issue as the Maya Solar calendar celebrates its “new year” in February, but of course most people want their calendars in December ready for the new Gregorian year. In order to resolve this issue, my 2023 calendar has become a 14 month calendar that includes the months of January and February 2024 so that the whole of the year 11 E’ (and the whole of 2023) are covered. As usual, the shipping situation in Guatemala means that printed copies will only be available locally, in the usual stores in San Marcos la Laguna, in late November 2022.  However, you can purchase an electronic copy, in English or Spanish, as a pdf here.
