8 IqThe nawal Iq’ governs communication and change and today it is combined with the number of wholeness, the number 8. The words of the young combine with those of the old to bring the complete message.

The eighth day of the trecena is the most widely recognised day of ceremony, and the ceremonies today are to give thanks for the many qualities attributed to the nawal Iq’. First and foremost, they are for the breath of life. As this wind fills our lungs we live and we move, the continual change from inhale to exhale representing life itself. In some ways, we can see life as a constant state of change and when change stops, so does life. It is the nawal Iq’ which breathes life into us. Therefore, in many ways, the celebration of nawal Iq’ is a celebration of life itself. It is also a day to recognise what the passing of the breath of life through our throats brings, that is communication. Iq’ days are wordy days, days to receive and transmit messages, especially when they are of deeper meaning. These are days when your words are empowered by the divine breath, sometimes you might not even recognise the words you utter. They are messages for others, not from you but through you. These messages bring change and therefore life, and today is a day to show gratitude for them.

The day 8 Iq’ can be seen as a day of communication, where inspiration may come to you in a truly useful, practical way. It can also be a day where challenging subjects that need to be discussed can be communicated in such a way that the point gets across without conflict. Changes might happen, but they happen with a particular grace and ease that helps to embrace life rather than turn it upside down. The effect of these changes will wholly depend on your attitude towards them.

As this wholeness represents every aspect of the energy of the day with which it is coupled, it is the wholeness of the nawal that is addressed in ceremony.

The trecena of Iq’ is a time to breathe life into something new. It may be a time of turbulence as the old pattern or path makes way for the new arrival. Hold on to your hats, this could be a bit of a wild ride!

Within the village of San Pablo la Laguna, there is an organisation doing great work. They are called ODIM and are specialising in medical and educational services. During the pandemic restrictions, they helped feed many people, but this is in addition to their regular, long term work there. Popol Jay is an ancient name to define the House of the Council of Elders, among the Maya of Guatemala. These were places of wisdom where sacred knowledge about medicine, the calendars, music, spiritual practice and more was kept and passed to future generations. All were burnt down during the Conquest and subsequent Colonization periods. Today, the Q’eqchi’ Maya Council of Elders Releb’aal Saq’e has joined forces with many supporters to rebuild the Popol Jay of the North, in the lowlands of the Petén region, heart of the Maya culture of the Classic Period. The Elders have worked hard to acquire land and co-design this Center of Knowledge to share ancient wisdom with the World. 1 Iq'The day 1 Iq’ is a day of potential for communication. Inspiring words can be like seeds which may take some time to take root. It is a day to plant the ideas of changes, but actual effects may take some time.

This is a day for potential of movement, a day to make a new start as the cleansing energy of the nawal Iq’ blows away the dust and cobwebs from the old world. The energy behind this movement may need nurturing, some encouragement and support, possibly through inspiring words. Likewise, maybe the angry words associated with Iq’ are tempered today, a little more gentle, something which takes time to sink in. 

Today is the beginning of the trecena of Iq’, which may have several properties all tied together with quality of movement. This can include inspiration and communication through the movement of breath and change of state through movement. We could also view qualities of the trecena of Iq’ as a microcosm of the year lord of Iq’. Iq’ years are known for the sudden changes that may occur, which in turn may bring anger or upset to those who are unready or unwilling to change. The strength of Iq’ is such that the changes cannot be avoided, they can embraced or resisted, but will go ahead regardless. Of course embracing them is really the way to proceed, this trecena may require a degree of flexibility in order to get the most out of it. Now is the time for inspired movement and change.

7 IqOnce again the nawal Iq’ brings a strong energy of change and communication to the day, but today its combination with the number of balance may lead to some indecision.

The day 7 Iq’ is a day when you find yourself easily able to communicate at many different levels. It is a balanced day which might not find the full inspiring force of Iq’, but is unlikely to find great anger either, a day of balanced communication, firm but fair. It could be a good day to finalise changes that you may have been considering.

It is difficult not to use the phrase “final word” in relation with the energy of this day. This may be an excellent day to wrap up any ongoing conversations, discussions or negotiations you may have been having. However, be very aware of the words you are using, their finality may lead to the burning of some bridges you may later have to rebuild.

It is another representation of the change of state of the soul, showing half of the journey (1-6) in the mortal world and half (8-13) in the otherworld.

13 Iq'Today the number of ancestors and the spirit world combines with the nawal of communication. This may be a day when important messages come through loud and clear, from this world or the other.

The energy of the nawal Iq’ is strong and can be unpredictable. It can bring change into our lives, and this may be sudden and unexpected, changing our direction or blowing something to us without warning. When this energy is combined with the number 13, the strongest of the numbers, this may result in great changes arising, with the power of the spirit world behind them.

Iq’ days are great days on which to make announcements, as your words are empowered and carry more weight. If you have something big to say, today would be an excellent day for it. 12 Iq'A strong number and a strong nawal combine today to give the potential for great inspiration or great bluster. The decision on how to use your words may result in big consequences.

The nawal Iq’ has the power to inspire, after all, it is the breath of life itself, the divine breath, moving through us, animating us and bringing movement into the world. However, sometimes that movement is uncertain, it brings unexpected changes. Sometimes Iq’ brings destruction with its force.

Today it is married with the number 12, the highest of the even numbers. Whilst it is powerful, the fact that it is an even number usually gives the energy of 12 days a rather positive feel as they bring together previous experiences from our lives.

5 Iq'Clear and effective communication is always an important goal, especially if it can become something which transcends the usual level. Today is a day to work towards this ideal, although it might not come easily.

The nawal Iq’ does highlight communication, but it also brings about changes and its most challenging property is anger. These three properties can all be seen working hand in hand. Lack of communication can lead to anger, as can enforced, or unforeseen changes. It is worthwhile remembering this on Iq’ days, as sometimes the energy can make people more sensitive to these things and produce a stronger than expected reaction.

Days carrying the number five have some interesting properties and can lead to some frustration. It all comes down to putting effort into or working on the properties of the nawal to which it is attached.

This can lead to a day where putting a little extra effort into the clarity of your words will certainly help to overcome possible negative outcomes. The Sacred Mayan calendar is often said to be a calendar of human life, and parts of it can be seen as a microcosm of the human body. The number five is one of these parts. It is representative of the hand with it’s five digits. It is with our hands that we work, and with what we earn for that work that we pay our debts. Five is also a number that relates to the sacred fire where we pay our debts with offerings and prayers. Five might be so busy working that it fails to remember what it is working for. It can also signify that what it is attached to becomes work, or is “hard work”.

11 Iq'The energy of a strong and unpredictable nawal combined with the similar influence of the number 11 may give rise to a day where you have to buckle up for a wild ride.

I once described the energy of 11 days rather like a firework with a broken stick. It has a great deal of energy to expend, but which direction it will go in is unknown. Even when it starts in one direction, it can change in the blink of an eye. With the energy of many nawales, this might be relatively easy to deal with, but Iq’ is changeable in its nature anyway. Iq’ too can move from its soft, gentle breeziness to its hurricane force very quickly, not to mention its ability to change direction. This is a day when sudden, unexpected changes are highly possible, especially if they are connected to a lot of bluster.

With Iq’ governing communication, we could expect a similar experience with regards to our interactions with others today too. The energy of this day could lead to a lot of chatty conversations. These could possibly again be rather directionless, although that is not to say that there will be no wisdom in them – it just may take a long time to get to the point. This may be frustrating in a  busy western world, but it also reminds us of the true art of communication and conversation.

This is where the lessons of Iq’ may come to the fore. Iq’ teaches us to learn to adapt, to embrace the changes it brings, to learn to be flexible. When we learn to “ride” the wind we may actually find it is rather enjoyable, just watch birds playing in the wind. If we try to resist or direct this flow today, it may lead to meeting one of the other properties of Iq’, anger. The power of the wind is too strong for us to influence. As the divine breath, Iq’ reminds us to focus on our breathing, and with the potentially wild and unpredictable energy today, it may be more important than ever to take a breath before we react.
