August 2017

Here are the days of the Chol Q’ij mapped onto the Gregorian month of August 2017.

This has the possibility of a powerful month astronomically, with a partial lunar eclipse over East Africa, Asia and Australia on 4 Tz’i (7th August), followed by a full solar eclipse over the USA on 5 K’at (21st August.) Venus is still in its morning star phase, and is now appearing later each morning, Saturn and Jupiter are still visible in the evening in the south and west respectively.

Here in Guatemala we will observe the solar zenith transit on 13th August. Twice during the year, around 31st April and 13th August, the sun passes directly above, at 90 degrees to the horizon. On these days a stick pointing directly upwards will cast no shadow at noon. Between these dates there are 105 days, and during this time the sun is in the north at midday. After 13th August, the sun will return to the southern sky for 260 days. This was once proposed as another reason for the sacred calendar having 260 days. It is also very close to the generally accepted start date of the long count calendar, 13.0.0.0.0 4 Ajpu 8 Kumku, of 11th August 3114 BCE using the Goodman-Martinez-Thompson correlation, although in Thompson’s own correlation, the day of creation does actually fall on 13th August 3114 BCE.
